First stop on my own was Coromandel, home to the famous hot water beach. I took the chance to sea kayak to the popular Cathedral Cove and its beach which was a very well needed work-out. After an afternoon spent moving from beach to beach we eventually made it to hot water beach. Famous for when during a low tide, hundreds of people come and dig their own hole in the sand and then get into the 50 degree Celsius water, something to do with the earth's crust I think . . . That night we were treated to a BBQ in a limited and pretty lonely hostel as Coromandel doesn't really offer much more than it's beaches but nevertheless it was a good night with a fair amount of alcohol accompanying the BBQ. The next morning we set off very early to a place called Waitomo, famous for its glow worm or glow maggot caves. Here is where the black water rafting trips take place which is where me and Charlie did ours a few weeks ago. So I took the chance to catch up on some sleep at the hostel before making my way down to the pub, one of only five buildings in the entire town of Waitomo, an even more remote place than Coromandel. Again though the evening was a good one, spent by me personally winning at pool and darts and dominating a "farmers" pie, a very large steak and mash pie which was very much appreciated as I am still only managing to make nothing more than microwaved noodles and toast. I've now made it back to Rotorua where I am only staying for one night since I was here with Charlie for four days, same with Taupo and Wellington which are my two destinations after that, so my next blog will be from back in the South Island as I finish completely in the north, at the tip in a place called Kaiteriteri.
