So we were up at 5am to get to Whistler for free parking at 7.30am – lifts open at 8. We were very excited to get on the “biggest and best mountain” in Canada. Megan has become a very good consistent skier, especially after all the fun and games we had on her first blue run back in Wildcat 3 months ago! She actually had a lesson in Revelstoke which really shot her confidence and ability up. So we get up to the Sea to Sky Highway to see that instead of the glorious sunshine we had yesterday, rain rain rain! It was like being back in the UK! We were seriously starting to worry, as there is nothing worse than skiing in the rain and slushy snow.
Megan and I spent the morning on Whistler Mountain and after getting the Gondola to above the cloud cover we found 15cm of new snow! How much fun was this? We had never skied in such fresh powder before; it was phenomenal – especially our second run which had us up to our knees in powder. Getting to the mountain early was definitely the way to go – we got so many powder runs in before it started to get busy.
The runs are huge the scenery when the weather clears is gorgeous and the skiing was unsurpassed, the only one that came close was Sunshine in Banff. It offers everything from beginners runs to very difficult runs (like Revelstoke), with parks and off piest. It was just brilliant. Anyhow something we found fun - was the weather – we had everything from huge snowstorms to cloud, fog and glorious sunshine! Some of the pictures we have were stunning.
Onto the afternoon I broke the new Board out and went on a visit to Blackcomb Mountain (the adjacent one to Whistler). Megan was very supportive when on my first run when I stacked it – however not off the lift which I was very happy about. The rest of the day mainly consisted of me on my arse, and Megan skiing past me at speed! She is becoming scarily good! Anyhow the board is awesome – fast and very flexible, so more practice is definitely required!
All in all, the mountain is brilliant even in the so called “spring conditions”, so much powder and so much fun! Will head up there again sometime before the season finishes (which is June) just because it was so good! Megan and I loved it….
